This is the most traditional and popular kachumber salad in Pakistan; it only takes five minutes to prepare and goes well with almost any meal. A year-round favorite, this salad is simple, refreshing, and free of gluten and carbs.

Kachumber

Indeed, during my childhood in Pakistan, that was the only recipe for Pakistani salad that I was aware of. In fact, salad” usually refers to a proper vegetable mixture and dressing; alternatively, “sa-laad” refers to sliced vegetables served on a plate, which is what is commonly served with Pakistani cuisine.

What Is the Meaning of Kachumber?

“Kachumber” is also known as “ka-choo-mar” in Pakistan, which means that the vegetables have been finely chopped and thoroughly mixed to create a delicious salad.

What Ingredients Do You Need for the Salad?

The best thing about this recipe is how easy it is to make with ingredients that are typically found in every household. Because this is a very simple recipe, there is no need to prepare the dressing separately—just chop everything and combine! It is as simple as that!

Ingredients for Kachumber
  • Onion: Onions are the main ingredients and bring lots of flavor and crunch. Red or purple onions are the ideal ones since they have a milder flavor.
  • Tomatoes: Choose juicy and firm tomatoes.
  • Fresh herbs: Depending on availability and personal preference, you can add either fresh mint or cilantro, both of which have a refreshing flavor.
  • Green Chili: Thai pepper or any green chili can be used; remove the seeds if the pepper is extremely hot.
  • Lemon: Use freshly squeezed lemon or lime. Lemon with seasoning works as a dressing in the recipe. Additionally, you can adjust the amount to suit your preferences. A good substitute for lemon is vinegar.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: For the seasoning, use freshly ground salt and pepper.

Tips To Make The Best Kachumber Salad Recipe

  • Reduce the sharpness of raw onion flavor by soaking chopped onion in cold water for 15 minutes, draining, and then using it.
  • Deseed the tomatoes before adding them
  • Seasoned well
  • Serve immediately. It tastes best when served fresh.
  • It is simple to keep leftovers in the refrigerator for the following day by storing them in an airtight container.

Variations

Mint leaves can be used instead of clintro. Both fresh and dried mint work well.

You can substitute pre-squeezed lemon juice for fresh lemon or lime juice. However, vinegar is a good lemon substitute in terms of tanginess.

Although cucumber is not in the original recipe, it can be added for flavor and crunch.

Bonus Raita Recipe

Sharing a tasty quick tip and recipe, these same ingredients make the best raita, which is delicious on its own or with any rice dish. Just add yogurt and roasted cumin powder and mix well.
