Ingredients for Hummus

Simple Ingredients

Chickpeas (or garbanzo beans) are the base of the recipe You can use canned or home-cooked chickpeas in this recipe. For this recipe, I used canned to help save time.

Tahani: made from ground sesame seeds, making homemade tahini takes only 5 minutes. If you want to try storebought, Amazon or Whole Foods organic tahini are usually the good ones.

Garlic cloves: cloves add a kick and strong flavor. I used fresh, raw garlic for this. If your food processor is not super powerful, crush it before adding it in to make sure it blends into the hummus well.

Lemon juice: Fresh is best to get the most out of the fresh lemon taste in the sauce.

Olive oil adds a velvety texture to hummus. Serve it with an extra drizzle of oil on top!

Salt: Enhances the flavor

Ice cubes: It helps make the hummus fluffier, in my opinion. After seeing many versions of hummus using this method, I confirmed that it does make a difference.

The liquid from the chickpeas, also known as aquafaba, helps to adjust the consistency of the hummus and adds extra creaminess.

Tips for Making Delicious Hummus With Sesame Seeds:

  1. Use high-quality ingredients; start with fresh, high-quality chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, and fresh lemon juice for the best flavor.
  2. If you want extra creaminess, remove the chickpea skins to make your hummus extra smooth. This takes longer, but it results in a smoother texture for the hummus.
  3. If boiling chickpeas for hummus, it would be suggested to add ½–1 teaspoon baking soda (depending on the amount you are cooking) to the water while they cook. This will allow the extra tenderness to create an even smoother texture.
  4. Set aside some of the liquid when draining canned chickpeas or cooking dried chickpeas. This liquid, known as aquafaba, can be used to adjust the consistency of the hummus and add extra creaminess.
  5. To make perfect hummus with a smooth and creamy texture, it is essential to use a high-power food processor. If your processor is not strong enough, it may struggle to blend your hummus properly. In that case, make sure to scrape down the sides between blending and crushing your garlic. However, if your hummus still looks grainy, don’t worry; you can blend it for longer, even up to 5 minutes, to get the desired silky consistency.
  6. Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning as needed. Adjust lemon juice, garlic, salt, or olive oil to suit your preferences.

How To Store Hummus

If you are making hummus at home, you will likely end up with no leftovers. A true story indeed! However, you can easily store the leftover hummus in an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to a week. If you find that the hummus has thickened in the fridge, you can add some olive oil to thin it out before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed

  • 1 clove garlic

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice

  • Salt, to taste

  • Extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 Ice cubes to help smooth blending

Directions

  • Make homemade tahini sauce.
  • In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the sesame seeds until golden brown, stirring frequently to prevent burning. This should take about 2–3 minutes.
  • Blend it finely in a food processor until smooth. Add olive oil to make a paste. Season with salt.
  • Instructions For Hummus
  • Drain and rinse the chickpeas from the can thoroughly. Set aside some liquid to use later
  • Peel and finely chop the garlic clove.
  • In a food processor, combine drained chickpeas, chopped garlic, sesame seed paste (tahini), and lemon juice.
  • While blending, add the ice cubes. Once well combined, gradually pour in the extra virgin olive oil until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Adjust the amount of olive oil based on your desired texture.
  • Aquafaba, a liquid derived from chickpeas, can be used for extra creaminess.
  • Add salt to taste. Blend again to ensure an even distribution of salt.
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste the hummus and adjust the lemon juice, salt, or olive oil as needed to suit your preference.
  • Serve: Transfer the hummus to a bowl, drizzle with a bit of extra virgin olive oil, and garnish with additional sesame seeds and paprika powder if desired.
