What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a root that comes from the Curcuma longa plant. It grows commercially in Southeast Asia. It has a warm, bitter, black pepper-like flavor and an earthy, mustard-like aroma. In South Asia, turmeric is traditionally used for disorders of the skin, upper respiratory tract, joints, and digestive system.

Moreover, studies show that pairing turmeric with black pepper increases health benefits. Strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties are found in turmeric curcumin. However, the disadvantage of curcumin is that it is not well absorbed by the body. That’s where black pepper comes in. Black pepper contains the active ingredient piperine, which aids in the body’s absorption of curcumin. Black pepper and turmeric are two potent spices that work well together.
